Observations Flashcards
What is behavioural categories
Check list of operationalised behaviours that you’re looking for then tally when you see it
What is event samplin
Record when you see an event you’re looking for occur
What is time sampling
Decide the time you’re going to observe eg watch for 1 min every 2 mins
Controlled observation
Control extraneous variables and environment
Naturalistic observation
Take place in natural environment nothing controlled natural behaviour
Covert observation and evaluation
Dont know they’re being observed
✔️no demand characteristics natural behaviour
✖️ ethical issues no informed consent etc
What is overt observation
Pp know they’re being observed
✔️no ethical issues
✖️ know they’re being watched so might change their behaviour (investigator effect)
Participant observation
Researcher can do observation where they become part of the experiment
Non pp observation
Watch from a distance don’t get involved so their presence doesn’t impact behaviour
Inter rater reliability and how it can be improved
When there is more than one observer then at the end they compare their results to see if they have a correlation if they do the findings have inter rater reliability .
-train observers
How to stop investigator effects
Double blind
-pp and researched doesn’t know the aim of the study
Single blind
Pp don’t know the aim of the study
