Advantages of narrative method

A

Needs no preparation, can be used to observe all areas of development, and can be used to observe more than one area of development at once

Q

Disadvantages of narrative method

A

Can be hard to write down everything quickly, the observer is likely to have to keep stopping and choose what to focus on and can be hard to record accurately without judgement

Q

Disadvantages of checklist and tick charts

A

Observer may come to a different conclusion to whether the child has mastered the skill or not and does not show how quickly or confidently a child has managed the task or skill

Q

How an event sample works

A

A prepared sheet is drawn to record the child’s behaviour, when the event happens, the observer will fill in the sheet and record the time, what happened, who the child was with and what happened. After a few events, the observer will look back to see if there is any patterns in the behaviour

16
Q

Advantages of a time example

A

Shows what children are doing over a longer period than a narrative record and can be used to look at different aspects of a child’s development

17
Q

Disadvantages of a time sample

A

The observer has to keep an eye on the time, The observer has to be organised and prepare a sheet

18
Q

How to carry out the sociogram method

A

Used to find out about children’s friends. You need to ask each child who they like to play with but alone as they could be influenced. A note is made and a chart is created and analyse to see if the children’s names are frequently named by other children or if their name is not named by any others.

19
Q

Advantages of sociogram method

A

Can be useful to find out who children play with, useful to older children who may be playing out of sight of adults

20
Q

Disadvantages of sociagram method

A

Can be very unreliable and can only be used with older children to know their friendship groups once settled in
