Q

What are disadvantages of natural observation?

A

Lack of control means there could be more influence on behaviour which may not be natural.

6
Q

What is an advantage of participant observation?

A

-You have a good vantage point and understanding of who and what you are observing,
-being an insider can get more information and detailed experiences.

Q

What is Unstructured observation?

A

Researcher/Observer continuously records or reports everything that happens. This increases amount of data collected

12
Q

What is a disadvantage of unstructured observation?

A

-May be too much going on to record that observation isn’t success
-data may be too detailed and dense, difficult to summarise and make comparisons between participants etc

13
Q

What is structured observation?

A

Where a structure is placed on observation to meet their aim (Look for certain behaviours). This increases usefulness and objectivity of study

16
Q

What is covert observation?

A

Where the participant does not know they are being observed.

17
Q

What is an advantage of Covert observation?

A

Natural behaviour can be seen
-Sampling real behaviour, not tainted by subject reactivity.

18
Q

What is a disadvantage of Covert observation?

A

-Unethical, people may not give fully natural response however if they knew they were being watched.

19
Q

What is overt observation?

A

Where the participant does know they are being observed.
