Oblique effect Flashcards
What is the oblique effect?
it states that participants are better at detecting and discriminating cardinal orientations (horizontal and vertical) compared to oblique (diagonal)
Orban et al (1984)
showed two Gabor patches on the screen and participants had to say if it was clockwise or counter clockwise.
Participants were clearly better at detecting cardinal orientations
Why do we see this Oblique effect?
Liet et al: more cells are tuned to cardinal than oblique orientations and the idea is that the visual environment forms and shapes your visual cortex
Annis and frost compared city raised Canadians and cree Indians and results showed bigger oblique effects for Canadians.
summary oblique effect for orientation
- more neurons tuned to cardinal than oblique motions
- firm signals are more pronounced for cardinal
- visual environment during development
- we encounter more cardinal orientations
