In his study of asylums, conducted a covert observational study by getting a job in the asylum and then noted what he saw. Disturbed about the treatment of patients, and noted they were stripped of their personal identity. They were given no autonomy and were ‘dehumanised’. He published his study and shows how sociologists must take the side of the underdog
