Objectives and tools of World Regionsal Geography Flashcards
What are the Subclasses of Geography
Main Branches: Physical and Human
Subdivisions:
- General/Regional
-Physocal / Human
-Applied
What is a Region and how is it defined
Area with some common characteristics
a convienient and somewhat arbitrary way to organize space
what is map scale (define both types)
def: amount of reduction depicted by a ration of units on the map to the number of units on the earths surface
Large Scale : lots of detail in a small area
Small Scale: Little detail in a larger area
What is map projection ( what does it do)
forlmula to flatten the round earth onto paper
- distortion is inevitable
how does space differ from place
space can be thought of as the entire surface of planet earth, within a space there are many places
Define place
the physical and human characteristics of any location ( must have human presence of some kind )
Define space
a gridded expanse in which you can measure location
What are the main devices of geographic coordinates
Latitude- angle from the equator (N or S)
Longitude - angle from the prime meridian (W or E )
(polar coordiante system)
Origin of lines of longitude
lines of longitude are termed meridians, and converge at the poles
prime meridian is the basis for all measurements (point 0)
Origin of latitude
Lines or latitudes are termed parallels and are measured from the equator.
How are geographic coordinates measured ( and conversions)
geographic coordinates are measured in degrees, minutes and seconds of arc (DMS)
DD - decimal degrees
What are the Hemispheres and how are they determined
Northern Hemisphere: Half of the earth N of the equator
Southern Hemisphere: half of the earth S of the equator.
Eastern Hemisphere: part of the Earth east of the atlantic ocean and west of the South and North America
Western Hemisphere: lies west of the prime meridian and east of the 180th meridian
What is the geospatial revolution , what are its technologies
Remote sensing
Global Navigation Satellite Systems
Geographic information Systems
