Objectives Flashcards

Q

What is the generic?

A

When considering my character’s objectives within each extract I have a process where I first have to think about my characters overarching objective then I break my piece down into units and give each unit its own objectives for my characters to achieve. Units and objectives were an invention by Stanislavsky and helped actors systematically approach their work.

Q

What are the specific objectives?

A

My overarching objective in Othello is to ruin Othello’s life and I want to strip other people of their humour to put my plan into motion. I want revenge for him passing me up for promotion in favour of Cassio and for him sleeping with my wife, presumably. My obstacles are Othello and Cassio. My overarching objective in Casualties to get to the bottom of Mike’s suicide by investigating Emma’s role in it. Once I have achieved this during the scene the overarching objective becomes much more personal where Peter is trying to get Emma to realise what she did to Mike and what she could do to her husband Gary.

I broke my piece into 7 units for both as you can see on the sheet. For example, in Othello my first objective is to reassure Rodrigo and knock sense into him and my second objective is to direct Rodrigo into what I want him to do; in Casualties, my first objective is to be honest about the situation, this is the first time she’s hearing of how Mike died and my second objective is to investigate.

Actioning is very important as, in Othello, I need to get across to the audience what I’m trying to do to Rodrigo: “I convince you” and “I reassure you”. In Casualty, I need to get Emma to do things. “I question you “ and later “I convince you”.
