Objective 04: 1st and 2nd Law of Thermodynamics Flashcards
Heat
The energy associated with the motion of molecules within a body
Temperature
An indication of the heat intensity in a body
Considering what it indicates, what information does temperature provide an engineer?
- The direction of heat transfer to or from the body under consideration
- The rate of heat transfer between bodies of different temperatures
- The material requirements for particular services
What happens to the temperature of 2 substances at different temperatures that come into contact with each other?
Their temperatures equalize as heat is transferred from the hotter object to the colder one
1st Law of Thermodynamics
Work and heat are mutually convertible
What happens to a system when work is applied UPON it?
There is a corresponding increase in the internal energy of the system and therefore increase in temperature
What happens to a system when work is applied BY it?
There is a corresponding decrease in the internal energy and decrease in temperature
2nd Law of Thermodynamics
External work must be done to transfer heat from a lower temperature system to a higher temperature system
