Q

Tanaka & Farah, 1993

A

Showed subjects specific parts of the face (nose, mouth, eyes) → subject were less accurate to identify specific parts rather than identifying whole faces
Isolated parts lower rate than whole face
Concluded that faces are represented holistically (altogether): parts not represented on their own, only in context of whole face

Q

Faces Represented Holistically - View #2

A

Faces are different from other objects → subordinate level
–> We say “oh, michael jordan” not “oh, a face”
We are all “face experts” → fine distinctions among many faces
Faces are represented holistically just like experts represent their objects of expertise
