- Indications: Contraception, progestin hormonal therapy
- Additional benefits: Decreased risk of epileptic seizures and sickle cell crises
- Adverse effects: Osteopoenia with chronic use

- Causes inflammation and consequentially increased bloodflow to the endometrium
- This may lead to increased frequency and amount of bleeding
- Thus, it is a poor choice for patients with pre-existing menorrhagia or metrorrhagia
