Q
Where should oxygen sensor be placed on a new-born?
A
Place the pulse-ox sensor on the baby’s RIGHT wrist for the pre-ductal measurement. Placing it on the right wrist is important because this is the side where blood is received from the aorta before reaching the ductus arteriosus. Blood in the aorta past the ductus arteriosus may be mixed with blood from the pulmonary artery across the ductus, which may remain open for hours post-delivery. To permit a rapid acquisition of the signal, attach the probe to the baby first before connecting to the instrument.
