Obesity & PA Flashcards
List the key troubles with a large fat surplus
Liver disease
Colon cancer
Osteoarthritis
Stroke
Type 2 diabetes
Heart disease
Obesity and heart disease
Obese ind tend to have elevated cholesterol.
This can lead to plaque build up in the arteries.
They are twice as likely to have hypertension.
Obesity and type 2 diabetes
Ind w/ excess body fat (esp in the abdominal area) often become resistant to insulin, thus allows increases in the levels of circulating glucose.
This can result in diabetes.
A side effect is damage to blood vessels in the retina and lead to blindness.
Obesity and stroke
Risk of a stroke is 2-4 times higher in individuals with type 2 diabetes, 90% of whom are overweight.
Obesity and liver disease
Many obese ind develop deposits of fat inside the liver, a condition that can progress to cirrhosis in ~10% of cases + occasionally to liver failure.
Obesity and colon cancer
Obese ind are at greater risk of colon cancer.
Abdominal fat appears to increase the risk more than fat elsewhere.
Obesity and osteoarthritis
Being overweight places additional strain on the spine, hip + knee joints, causing loss of cartilage.
As cartilage deteriorates, joint space narrows + bones grind together.
