What is meant by weight stigma?
This is discrimination or stereotyping based on an individual’s weight
What are examples of negative stereotypes?
Obese people are lazy, lack self-discipline and are less competent

- emotional well-being
- physical well-being

How can emotional well-being affect an obese patient?
- development of depression and anxiety
- low self-esteem
- social rejection
- suicide
How can physical well-being be affected by weight stigma?
- unhealthy weight control behaviours, such as binge-eating

How can weight stigma affect the quality of health care?
Obese patients are more likely to delay or cancel medical appointments or preventative health services
What is significant about obesity and cancer?
Obesity is the second most important modifiable risk factor in the development of cancer, after tobacco use
What are the physical effects of obesity that affect the upper half of the body?
- stroke
- respiratory disease
- cardiovascular disease
- diabetes
- gall bladder disease
- non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
- oseteoarthritis
What are the physical effects of obesity that affect the lower half of the body?
- hormonal abnormalities/reproductive problems
- leg ulcers
- pressure sores
- hyperuraemia and gout
What is severe obesity defined by?
Having a BMI greater than or equal to 40
What is a very high waist circumference for men and women?
Greater than 102 cm in men
Greater than 88 cm in women
What is waist circumference a measure of?
A measure of central adiposity
How does very high waist circumference vary between men and women?
The prevalence of a very high waist circumference is much higher among women than men
Why is waist circumference measured?
There are links between waist circumference and risk of obesity-related conditions
