1 in 4 adults are obese. This proportion of obese adults has quadrupled since the 1980s.
32% of adult women are over weight.

- 2% of girls age 2-15 are obese.
What is obesity?
It results when a persons energy intake from food and drink exceeds the energy they use up, over a prolonged period of time.
What are the psychological aspects of gaining weight in mental illness such as psychosis?
Untreated symptoms of psychosis can result in weight loss, therefore recovery is usually associated with gaining weight.
What are the social and environmental aspects of weight gain and mental illness?
Being affected by mental illness can lead to a more sedentary lifestyle, which as a result can mean a person is less likely to exercise and they will eat unhealthy foods.
What are the psychological and social effects of increased weight?
A person will feel sluggish, bloated and out of breath.
They may have self image issues.
Coping experiences may be unsuccessful and could lead to believing that they have a form of eating disorder.
What are the consequences of a person being aware of their weight changes?
They may stop taking medication.
May become depressed.
They may comfort eat.
They may increase their alcohol intake.
All of these may lead to a more sedentary lifestyle, and they could possibly begin to develop physical illnesses that are associated with weight gain.

Reduction in calorie intake.

What cognitive behavioural techniques assist in controlling diet and weight?
Knowledge of food types and calorie content.
Knowledge of appropriate portion sizes.
Substituting good foods for bad foods.
Writing a food diary for awareness of what the person is eating.
Establishing an ideal weight for the person.
Setting achievable goals.
Strategies implemented to prevent a relapse.
What lifestyle advice can you give to an individual that will assist them in improving their physical health?
Medication management.
Gradually increasing the amount of exercise they do, considering any physical health limitations they may have.
Controlling their diet with a method that suits them individually.
