Obesity Flashcards
What does CCK do?
Released in proportion to lipids and proteins in meal.
Stimulates via sensory nerves to hindbrain.
Stimulates hindbrain directly via NTS.
What does ‘NTS’ stand for?
Nucleus solitary tract
What is the nucleus solitary tract?
Grey matter in the medulla oblongata. Cells are arranged via function (taste is higher up)
What is PYY? And where is it secreted from?
Pancreatic peptide that acts to reduce appetite.
Secreted from the L cells of G.I tract
What is GLP-1? Where is it secreted from?
Glucagon-like peptide 1
Secreted from the L cells of G.I tract
Acts to reduce food intake via hypothalamus and NTS
What is oxyntomodulin? Where is it secreted from?
Hormone found in the colon.
Suppresses appetite.
Released from oxyntic cells of small intestine.
What is obestatin?
Acts to reduce food intake.
Antagonises Ghrelin.
What is the main hunger signal?
Ghrelin
Name the gene that encodes leptin
Ob gene
Where is leptin produced?
Adipocytes
Name the receptor for leptin
Ob-R
Name the gene that encodes for the leptin receptor
db gene
How does leptin enter the brain?
Through a leptin specific transport system
Where are high levels of leptin found?
Expressed on arcuate nucleus (ARC) hypothalamic neurones
What is NPY?
Neuropeptide Y
Abundant in brain
Lots of neurones containing NPY in ARC
STIMULATES FOOD INTAKE
