What is obesity?
excess body fat. Or having a BMI of 30 or more.
What are the current parameters used to measure obesity?
waste circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, % body fat and skinfold thickness.
What is the ‘obesity epidemic’?
It refers to the global increase in body weight that started in the 1970’s, initially only in 1st world countries. Now, we see obesity is more prevalent in certain 2nd world nations like China and Mexico.
Which socioeconomic groups are more likely to be obese?
The lower socioeconomic groups are more likely to be obese than the higher ones.
As an individual’s body weight increases, which other diseases are they more susceptible to?
They have an increased risk of high BP, diabetes, cancer and disability.
How much money does obesity cost Australia per year?
About 10 billion dollars.
What drives obesity?
Energy imbalance, caused by over-nutrition and under-activity.
What are the determinants of obesity?
Societal influences, individual psychology, physical activity environment, individual physical activity levels, physiology, food cunsumption and food production.
