Bariatric surgery
When would you consider bariatric surgery as a first-line option for adults.
When they have a BMI of >50kg/m2.
What are the 3 types of bariatric surgery
-Gastric bypass
-Gastric band
-Sleeve gastrectomy
Explain gastric bypass surgery.
The top part of the stomach is joined to the small intestine, so you feel fuller sooner and dont absorb as many calories from your food.
Explain gastric banding.
A band is placed around the stomach so you don’t need to eat as much to feel full.
Explain what a sleeve gastrectomy is.
Some of your stomach is removed so you cannot eat as much as you could before.
