OB Vocab Flashcards
the period of development of the offspring during pregnancy (usually 40 weeks in a human)
gestation
the estimated gestation of an embryo or fetus in weeks and days based on the mother’s last normal menstrual periods or sonogram (34^5 is an EGA of 34 weeks and 5 days)
estimated gestational age (EGA)
period from conception until the beginning of true labor
antepartum (AP)
period from beginning of true through recovery from birth (about 2 weeks)
intrapartum (IP)
period from recovery to 12 weeks after birth
postpartum (PP)
number of pregnancies which have ended after 20 weeks of gestation or more (does not include a current pregnancy and is not counted until after birth)
para
number of times a woman has been pregnant
gravida
woman who is pregnant for the first time
primigravida
woman who has been pregnant more than once
multigravida
a woman who has given birth after at least 20 weeks of gestation regardless of status of infant (commonly used incorrectly to describe a woman before her first birth)
primipara
a woman who has given birth 2 or more times after 20 weeks of gestation
multiparous
end of pregnancy before 20 completed weeks of gestation
abortion
elective induced termination of pregnancy
elective abortion
induced termination of pregnancy for medical reasons
therapeutic abortion
“miscarriage”; loss of pregnancy prior to 20 completed weeks gestation due to natural causes
spontaneous abortion
due date; estimated date of; confinement, delivery, birth
ECS; EDD; EDB
lower cylindrical portion of the uterus (opening of the uterus)
cervix
the widening or opening of the cervix which is usually due to labor contractions
dilation (dil)
the shortening and thinning of the cervix that occurs early due to labor
effacement (eff)
the relation of the presenting part of the fetus (usually the head) to an imaginary line drawn between the maternal ischial spines (a measures of descent of the presenting part of the fetus through the birth canal)
station
largest diameter of the fetal presenting part (the part of the baby’s body that is coming first usually being the head) has reached a station of “0”
engagement
part of the fetus that is delivering first
presentation
palpation of the cervix by an examiner to determine the dilation and effacement of the cervix and the station and presentation of the fetus
sterile vaginal exam (SVE)
part of the female body between the vaginal opening and the rectum
perineum
the upper part of the uterus that is described as a dome or rounded
fundus
amniotic membranes and fluid
bag of water (BOW)
amniotic membranes intact
bag of water intact (BOWI)
a measure of the volume of amniotic fluid (has implications for fetal well-being) a good AFI is 5-25 cm
amniotic fluid index (AFI)
causes the amniotic fluid to gush or leak out through the vagina (intentionally)
rupture of fetal membrane (ROM)
“amniotomy”; the provider uses a hook to tear or break the membranes
artificial rupture of membranes (AROM)
spontaneous rupture of membranes (water broke)
spontaneous rupture of membranes (SROM)
before 34 weeks EGA; may also be used for premature rupture of the membranes (before labor begins)
preterm rupture of membranes (PROM)
amniotic; when the membranes rupture before 37 weeks gestation and before labor begins
premature preterm rupture of membranes (PPROM)
amniotic; when the fetus passes meconium (fetal stool) in utero; may be greenish and thick and the baby is at risk for aspiration of the meconium at birth
meconium stained fluid (MSF)
fetal heart rate and is sometimes used as FTT (fetal heart tones)
fetal heart rate (FHR)
a doppler device that is strapped to the mothers abdomen over the fetal heart to record the HR and uses ultrasound tech (sometimes called a US transducer)
electronic fetal monitor (EFM)
internal fetal monitor; and electrode is placed on the fetal presenting part after ROM to record FHR
fetal scalp electrode (FSE)
part of the electronic fetal monitor that measures contractions; the toco is placed externally where the contractions are palpated the strongest, usually on the fundus or top of the uterus
tocotransducer (toco)
a catheter placed through the cervix into the uterus after ROM to monitor uterine contractions
intra uterine pressure catheter (IUPC)
a measure of frequency and intensity of contractions using the IUPC
montevideo units (MVU)
regional anesthesia/analgesia used for labor, birth, or c section
epidural (epid)
incision of perineum to allow additional room for birth of presenting part
episiotomy (epis)
when a woman who had a cesarean birth with previous pregnancies goes through labor with a different pregnancy with the goal to to deliver vaginally
trial of labor after cesarean
vaginal birth after cesarean
VBAC
sterilization by litigation and/or suturing both fallopian tubes; may be done immediately after vaginal birth, during cesarean birth or 1-2 days after vaginal birth
bilateral tubal litigation (BTL)
blood types
ABO
a type of blood antigen if present the person is “positive blood type” if absent the person is negative
Rh
hep B virus
HBV
hepatitis B surface antigen
HbSAg
a microorganism which naturally occurs in the vagina of some women but is known to cause neonatal infection which can be severe and progress; also called beta-strep
group B strep (GBS)
a measure of CNS irritability
deep tendon reflexes (DTR)
