What are situational variables ?
In research ; milgram identified several factors that he believed influenced the level of obedience.
-related to external factors
Proximity
Physical closeness or distance of an authority figure to the person they are giving an order to
Location
The place where an order is issues.
Uniform
People in positions of authority have a specific outfit that is symbolic of their authority.
Eg . police officers,judges
Procedure ; promixity :
In the original study , teacher and learner were in adjoining rooms ; the teacher could hear the learner but not see him.
In this condition,obedience rate dropped from baseline 65% to 40%when they were in the same room.
Results of proximity variation ?
-Change of location to rundown office - 47.5%
- Teacher and learner in same room - 40%
-Teacher forces learner’s hand onto plate - 30%
-Experimenter gives order over the phone - 20%
What would ppt’s do ?
They would frequently pretend to give shocks or gave weaker ones when they were ordered to.
Location variation :
Location was changed to a run own building rather than a prestigious university (YALE)
The experimenter had less authority ; obedience fell to 47.5% from 65%
Uniform ; original study
In the original study the experimenter wore a grey lab coat as a symbol of authority.
Uniform ; variation
Experimenter was called away because of an inconvienient telephone call at the start of the procedure.
Role was taken over by ordinary member of public - in everday clothes.
Obedience dropped to 20% (lowest)
