- 40 weeks
- weigh 5.5 to 10 pounds
- 18 to 23 inches
SGA
Small for gestational age
-fall below the 10th percentile
AGA
Appropriate for gestational age
-fall between the 10th and 90th percentile
LGA
Large for gestational age
-fall above the 90th percentile
LBW
weigh less than 2,500 g
VLBW
weigh less than 1500 g
ELBW
weigh less than 1000 g
Signs of respiratory distress
- nasal flaring
- grunting
- substernal or subcostal retractions
Preterm or Premature (wks)
less than 37 weeks gestation
Post term or Postmature (wks)
greater than 42 weeks gestation
Term (wks)
between 37 and 42 weeks gestation
Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH)
Bleeding in brain
- bulging fontanels
- H&H low
- pale and weak
- increased head circumference
- poor perfusion
- Can result in coma or seizure
Retinopathy or prematurity (ROP)
Less than 28 weeks
Retinal nerve isn’t developed enough
-Can cause blindness
-Usually results in glasses
Necrotizing enterocolitis
Blockage in bowel resulting in ischemia of bowel
-possible bowel reconstruction or colostomy
Do you feed a respiratory distress baby by bottle?
No. Risk of aspiration is too great
