OA & RA Flashcards
RA
systemic connective tissue disease whose onset and progression vary from mild joint sx. with aching and stiffness to abrupt swelling, stiffness, and progressive deformities, periods of exacerbations and remissions.
RA clinical picture
Edema at the joints. Pain with motion. Can detect increased temp. at joints. Muscle atrophy due to disuse. Fatigues easily.
RA interventions
Positioning.
AAROM.
Active rest.
More caution when moving from isometric to isotonic.
Adapt activities.
RA joint protection principles (lower needed materials, raised toilet seat, alter set up of rooms).
OA
A slowly progressive uniarticular disorder of unknown cause, occuring late in life.
Principally affecting the hands and lare WB joints.
Characterized by pain, deformity, and limit of motion.
OA Pathology
Focal erosive lessions, cartilage destruction, subchondral sclerosis, cyst formation, and large osteophysites at the margin of the joints; very common in adults (60% of ages 60 and up have dx) more common in women than men.
OA Clinical Picture
Inflammation of joint.
Pain at rest and at use.
Potential for deformity and stiffness.
OA interventions
Can be worked harder than pts. w/ RA. Modalities: swimming. Positioning w/ sleeping. Active rest & joint protection. AAROM.
