A: 1. Superior fibers: upward rotation of scapula; can also help extend the head
2. Middle fibers: adduction of scapula (retraction)
3. Inferior fibers: depression & upward rotation of scapula

O: spinous processes of T7-L5, sacral crest, iliac crest and inferior 4 ribs

O: transverse processes of C1-C4
I: Upper 1/3 of medial border of scapula
A: elevation & downward rotation of scapula

A: elevation, adduction & downward rotation of scapula; stabilizes scapula
