O Flashcards
1.Phonetics
sounds that humans make while talking. The study of human speech.example the difference between the pronunciation of z and s.what actually happens SPECIFIC
2.Phoneme
a distinctive sound in a specific language.its the smallest unit of sound that distinguishes one word from another.
3.Phonology
the study of sound system found in human language.THEORY can’t measure it
4.What are 4 main components of the speech production mechanism
the airstream process-providing the power for speech.process where the vocal tract creates airflow
-the phonation process- the production and utterance of speech sounds.it begins when air is pushed from the lungs through the glottis.(the opening between the vocal folds located in the larynx.)
-the oro-nasal process-utilizes the oral tract, the nasal tract and the part of the pharynx in order to make sounds from the vibrations of vocal cords. These tracts and the pharynx can vary in shape and size from person to person, which leads to variations in voice.
-the articulation process- the formation of clear and distinct sounds of speech. The production of sounds involves the coordinated movement of your lips, tongue, teeth ,palate and respiration system.

1.bilabial sounds
made with two lips /p,b,m,w/
P voiceless b- voiced
labiodental sounds
made with the lower lip and upper front teeth /f,v/ f voiceless v-voiced
dental sounds
made with tip of the tongue or its blade and upper front teeth
/0,o/ 0 with a line inside and circle with a tip and a line
alveolar sounds-
-made with the tip or blade of the tongue and alveolar ridge
/t,d,s,z,n,l/ t-voiceless,how the sound is made is the difference, t closing the air floats and then opening, s no contact S-voiceless(t vs s)
retroflex sounds-
made with the tongue tip and the back of the alveolar ridge /r/but upside down
palato-alveolar sounds-
made with the tongue blade and the back of the alveolar ridge/f different then usual/ f,3,tf,d3,r/
palatal sounds
made with the front of the tongue and the hard palette/j/
velar sounds-
made with the back of the tongue and the soft palate/k,g,n/ n has one side longer
glottal sounds
made with glottis /h/ h-voiceless
