Nutritional Terms Flashcards
Nutrition
Branch of science that deals with food.
Nutrients

Macronutrients
Nutrients required in large amounts.
Measurement is “grams.”
Examples: Protein, fat and carbohydrates.
Micronutrients
Nutrients required in small amounts.
Measurement is “mg” or a upside-down h with a g.
Examples: Vitaminsand minerals.
Elements
What nutrients are made up of.
Example: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen.
Elemental Composition
Nutrients are formed from molecules that are made of elements.
Example: Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen.
Organic Nutrients
All nutrients that contain carbon.
Example: Protein, fat and carbs.
Inorganic Nutrients
Containing water and nutrients.
Metabolism
Metabolism is the process through which the body converts food we eat into energy.
Enzymes
Enzymes are protein catalysts that speed up chemical reactions without being used up.
Substrate
A substance an enzymes acts on.
Product
Substance produced by an enzymes reaction on a substrate.
Malnutrition
Diet high in food of poor nutritional value.
Starvation
Starvation is a severe deficiency in caloric energy intake, below the level needed to maintain an organism’s life (definition from the internet, not by my teacher or the book).
You live 28 days without eating.
Undernutrition
