Nutritional Assessment Flashcards
It is influenced by food intake, quantity, quality, and physical health
NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT
International standard for assessing body size in adults
BODY MASS INDEX - BMI
Give the DIRECT methods of assessing nutri status
ABCD
- Anthropometric methods
- Biochemical, laboratory methods
- Clinical methods
- Dietary evaluation methods
Three categories of INDIRECT method
- Ecological variables (ex. crop production)
- Economic factors
- Vital health statistics
This level in waist circumference is the maximum acceptable waist circumference irrespective of the adult age and there should be no further weight gain
LEVEL I
Purpose of nutritional assessment:
- Identify individuals/pop groups at risk of becoming malnourished
- Identify individuals/pop groups who are malnourished
Nutrition is assessed by two types of methods:
- Direct
- Indirect
It is the measure of body height, weight, & proportions
ANTHROPOMETRIC METHODS
Example of anthropometric measurements
- Mid-arm circumference
- Skin fold thickness
- Head circumference
- Head/chest ratio
- Hip/waist ratio
- Height
- Weight
> It utilizes a number of physical signs that are known to be associated w/ malnutrition and deficiency of vitamins & macronutrients
> Essential features of all nutritional surveys
simplest & most practical
This level in waist circumference denotes obesity and required weight management to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes & CVS complications
LEVEL II
It predicts mortality better than any other anthropometric measurement
WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE
WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE:
Male & Female - LEVEL I & II
Level I:
Males = > 94 cm
Females = > 80 cm
Level II:
> 102 cm
> 88 cm
It is measured at the level of the umbilicus to the nearest 0.5 cm
WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE
Males & Females:
High risk WHR
F = >0.80
M = >0.95
