Provide energy for body and fibre for defecation. Adds flavor/texture, helps preserve other foods. Found in sugar-jam, jelly; found in plants

Causes tooth decay; found naturally in many foods

Cane sugar
Milk sugar
Fruit sugar
Cane sugar - sucrose
Milk sugar - lactose
Fruit sugar - fructose
Starches or Complex Carbohydrates
Bread, pasta, rice and potatoes; not easily digested when uncooked
Fibre or cellulose
Bran, nuts, seeds, raw fruits with skin. Cannot be digested
What are fats?
Help the body to use vitamins, adds flavor to foods. Fish fats enhance immunity
Is saturated fat healthy or unhealthy?
Unhealthy, found in animal/dairy products
Is unsaturated fat healthy?
Healthy; found in fish and many vegetable oils
Trans-fat unhealthy?
Unhealthy; Increases flavor and shelf life. Found in margarine, shortening, fried foods, store bought cakes and cookies
What are vitamins needed for?
Needed for normal function and growth, does not provide calories. Cannot be made by the body
