Because it is a total of your basal metabolic rate, the energy used for physical activity, and the amount of energy you need to digest the food you eat (thermic effect).
How can you maintain a healthy body weight?
Maintaining a healthy body weight is largely dependent on keeping the calories you get from food balanced with your daily activity.

Being moderately active can lower the risks of: •high cholesterol and heart disease •high blood pressure •type 2 diabetes •joint problems •illness and infections •tiredness and low blood iron (anemia) •certain types of cancer •eating disorders •depression
