What is the prolactin receptor theory?

A

Epithelial muscle cells contract to squeeze the secreted milk in alveolus sack into ducts then into nipple

cell wall of each lactocyte - prolactin receptor sites:

  • rise in accordance to touch and suckling of baby
  • more touching increases the number of lactocytes being activated so more milk is produced

A

1) breast developmetn and colostrum production - approx 16 weeks of gestation
2) onset of copious milk secretion - 32 and 96 hrs after birth
