Nutrition For Childbearing Flashcards
what is falling weight during pregnancy (weight loss) a sign of ?
IUGR (intrauterine fetal growth retardation) or IUFD (intauterine fetal death)
why is folic acid important?
to prevent neural tube defects
what is hyperemesis gravidarum?
presistant and uncontrolled vomiting
what is fetal nuchal translucency ?
the neck is transparent , maybe a sign of down syndrome
what is oligohydraamnios ?
low amount of amniotic fluid
what is polyhydraamnios?
too much amniotic fluid
what is alpha-fetoprotein?
protein produced by yolk sac and fetal liver (AFP screening), it can be detected in maternal blood and amniotic fluid
what is a low amount of AFP a sign of ?
Down syndrome, molar pregnancy(the embryo is not development but the other organs are developed ), spontaneous abortion, overestimated gestational age,
what is a high amount of AFP a sign of?
open neural tube defects , abortion , distress , intrauterine death , congenital disease, abdominal wall defects (organs showing)
when does AFP peaks ?
at 13 weeks
what is chorionic villus sampling?
at 10-12 weeks od gestation , its to check for chromosomal disorders or congenital disorder , faster than amniocentesis ,risks fetal loss ,
what is amniocentesis ?
its done during the second trimester , to identify defects and to see fetal development ,to assess for RH compatibility ,
what is a non-stress test ?
to check for adequate oxygenation
what is a contraction stress test?
stimulatimg contraction by stimulating the nipple or giving oxytocin , to assess fetal response to contractions
