Nutrition during infancy Flashcards
How does the digestive and renal system develop as the infant grows
- The stomach grows and matures as the infant grows
- A newborn has a low renal capacity , so high protein intake can cause renal overload and induce osmotic diuresis and water loss .After 4-6 months the kidneys will mature enough to handle high solutes
Describe fluid ,energy and macronutrients required for a full term infant
- Young infants are highly sensitive to fluid deprivation and overhydration and underhydration and require enough fluid for temperature regulation
- Glucose metabolism is the primary energy pathway in infants
Describe fluid ,energy and macronutrients required for a full term infant
- Young infants are highly sensitive to fluid deprivation and overhydration and underhydration and require enough fluid for temperature regulation
- Glucose metabolism is the primary energy pathway in infants
*infants should consume 50% of their energy ,protein should be taken at a very low rate.
Describe the micronutrients requirement in infancy
- vitamins ,folate ,minerals to support growth
- Vitamin b12,D
- Fluoride may affect teeth enamel in children when they have water
Relate nutrients status to normal growth pattern
*Infants are categorized as small, appropriate ,large for their gestational age of preterm
*Infants may loose 10% of their birth weight in the first few days without cause for alarm ‘
*If not , evaluate what type of milk does the infant takes and how often do they eat ,quantity of wet and solid diaper’s each day
and if did the infant have solids
Compare cow milk ,formula milk to human milk
*When a mother does not breastfeed ,iron fortified infant formulas are only acceptable human milk substitute ..
Formula milk resemble human milk in all major constituents to promote growth and normal development
Cow milk should never be given to an infant less than 1 year
