Nutrition / Digestion Flashcards
What are the 4 processes necessary for animals to obtain energy from its food?
Ingestion – taking in food
Digestion – breaking down food into smaller particles
Absorption – uptaking food into the cells
Elimination – removal of unwanted waste materials
What techniques are used by animals when ingesting food?
Suspension Feeders filter small organisms or bits of organic debris from water, by means of cilia, mucous lined “nets”.
Deposit Feeders swallow organic-rich sediments and other types of deposited material.
Fluid Feeders suck or lap up fluids.
Mass Feeders seize and manipulate chunks of food by using jaws, teeth, beaks, or special toxin-injecting organs.
What are the 3 food sources for animals?
Plants or algae (Primary consumers)
Other animals (Secondary, tertiary, etc. consumers)
Detritus
What are the two types of digestion?
Intracellular
Extracellular
Example of a suspension feeder?
Scallop
Example of a deposit feeder?

What are animals that feed on dead organic matter called?
Detritivores
Endoparasites live inside their hosts.
Ectoparasites live outside their hosts
Where does digestion occur?
Digestive tract
What are the two types of digestion?
Intracellular
Extracellular
What are the two designs of the digestive tract?
Incomplete
