Nutrition Flashcards
What are the 5 components of Nutritional Assessment
- Anthropometry – measurement of body muscle and fat
- Biochemical – tests based on blood and urine
- Clinical Examination – medical history, physical exam, acute/chronic illness, setting
- Dietary Evaluation – history from patient; archival data/record
- Energy Expenditure (physical activity) – formulas regarding energy and dietary intake needs
Describe Antrhopometry
- Height
- Weight
- Body Mass Index (BMI)
- Waist Circumference
- % Body Fat
How to measure Body Mass Index (BMI)? What are categories and ranges?
- Multiply current weight by 703
- Divide that number by hight in INCHES
- Divide that number by hight in INCHES = BMI
- Underweight: <18.5
- Healthy: 18.5 - 24.9
- Overweight: 25 - 29.9
- Obese: 30 - 34.9
- Severely obese: 35 - 39.9
- Morbidly obese: >40
Waist Circumference categories and ranges
- Very low: F = <70cm; M = <80cm
- Low: F = 70-89cm; M = 80-99cm
- High: F = 90-109cm; M = 100-120cm
- Very high: F = >110; M = >120cm
How do you measure Waist Circumference?
1) Make sure abdomen is unrestricted
2) Align the bottom edge of the tape measure on the top of the top of the hipbone
3) Make sure the tape is placed horizontally
4) Take 2 - 3 normal breaths –> Tighten the tape measure after 3rd breath
5) Take measurement
Body Fat Percentage ranges
- Essential fat: F = 10-13%; M = 2-5%
- Athletes: F = 14-20%; M = 6-13%
- Fitness: F = 21-24%; M = 14-17%
- Average: F = 25-31%; M = 18-24%
- Obese: F = +32%; M = +25%
