What is nutrition?
The study of food, what it is made up of, how much the body needs and how that food affects the body.
Define food.
Any substance solid or liquid that contains nutrients.
What is a nutrient?
Any substance that can be digested and used by the body.
What is a balanced diet?
A diet that contains all the nutrients in the correct proportion for the needs of the body.
List the six nutrients.
- Protein
- Fat
- Carbohydrates
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Water
What does composition refer to in nutrition?
What the nutrient is made up of.
What does classification refer to in nutrition?
Putting nutrients into classes or groups.
What are the sources of nutrients?
Where the nutrient is found.
What are the functions of nutrients?
What does the nutrient do in the body.
What is a deficiency disease?
An illness we get if we do not have enough of a nutrient.
What elements make up protein?
- Carbon
- Hydrogen
- Oxygen
- Nitrogen
What are the two classifications of protein?
- Animal protein/HBV protein
- Vegetable protein/LBV protein
What are the functions of protein?
- Growth and repair of all body cells
- Makes hormones, enzymes, and antibodies
Why are vegetable sources of protein considered better than animal sources?
- Contain less fat
- Contain more fibre
- Cheaper to produce
- Less land needed for production
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which carbohydrates are made in plants.
What are the three groups of carbohydrates?
- Sugar
- Starch
- Cellulose or Fibre
What is cellulose/fibre and its importance?
Helps move food along the digestive system and prevents bowel cancer.
What are the three elements that compose fats?
- Carbon
- Hydrogen
- Oxygen
What are the two types of fats?
- Saturated fats
- Unsaturated fats
What is the recommended maximum intake of fat for an average adult?
No more than 70 g of fat per day.
What are the sources of calcium?
- Milk
- Cheese
- Yoghurt
- Tinned fish
- Green vegetables
- Fortified products
What is the function of calcium?
Builds strong healthy bones and teeth.
What deficiency disease is caused by a lack of calcium?
Rickets.
What is a common deficiency disease associated with iron?
Anaemia.
