NUTRITION Flashcards
Is the supply of materials (food) required by organisms and cells to stay alive.
Nutrition
Three types of nutrients
•Macronutrients
•Micronutrients
•Phytonutrients
Known as fuel nutrients, provides the greatest amount of energy needed by the body for work and normal body functions.
Macronutrients
Constitute the majority of energy source for the body.
Carbohydrates
Used as fuel by the body when it is broken down as glucose
Glycogen
basic building blocks of our body.
used for repair and growth of body tissue.
helps control the water level inside and outside the cells.
Protein
SOURCES OF PROTEIN
meat, dairy products, nuts, grains and beans.
Serves as fuel when it is broken down into two types of molecules – glycerol and fatty acids. Energy is released when these are broken down. Is stored under our skin or adipose tissue.
Provides energy, supports cell growth, absorbs nutrients, and produces important hormones.
Fat
Fat that is solid at room temperature.
- most are from animal origin.
- Raise the cholesterol level in the bloodstream.
Saturated fat
fat that is liquid at room temperature.
- from plant (avocado, olives, walnuts, and vegetable oils) and some animal sources
(fish); consumed in moderation
Unsaturated fat
fat formed during a process called hydrogenation. - Raise blood cholesterol and raise risk of heart disease.
Trans Fats
is commonly used during the manufacturing of food products where unsaturated fats and oil are converted to saturated fats and oils.
Hydrogenation
Are needed by the body in small amount
vitamins, minerals, and water are known as regulatory nutrients. They have no caloric value but are still necessary for a person to function normally and maintain good health.
MICRONUTRIENTS
Are organic compounds, they are made by plants and animals.
help regulate metabolic reactions in the body.
Substances that your body needs to grow and develop normally.
Vitamins
Are inorganic elements, which means that they come from the soil and water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals.
help form structures in the body and regulate body processes
Minerals
