What is Dietitian?
Health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems
What is Malnutrition
deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy and/or nutrients
Types of nutritional interventions
-Oral supplementation
-Enteral nutrition (straight into GI tract)
-Total Parenteral Nutrition (somewhere other than mouth) TPN
-Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG)
What are macronutrients
The nutrients we need in larger quantities that provide us with energy
What is refeeding syndrome?
shifts in fluids and electrolytes that may occur in malnourished patients receiving artificial refeeding
Measure of nutrition
Anthropometric
height, weight, body mass index, skinfold thickness, waist to hip ratio
Biochemical Measurement
functional or specific nutrients
haemoglobin, iron, calcium, phosphate

Hydration
sodium, potassium, osmolality
