What are the consequences of dieting?
Creates a poor relationship with food and body
Risk of weight cycling, especially if it become chronic
Inadequate nourishment
Set Point Theory
Weight range that a person’s body lands in naturally. This is based in genetics, biological factors and our environment.
Influences: Chronic dieting, restriction, etc. can alter this number. If someone is weight cycling because of these things, it can cause our set point to increase overtime.
What is BMI?
Body mass index
- A measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.
PROBLEMATIC! - This was never intended to be used for the general population and is based on white males.
Eating disorders do not discriminate, regardless of BMI, someone can still have an ED. Most research is on low BMI females in the ED population.
IBW
Ideal Body Weight
HAWMI Method
Women: 100+ for every inch over 5 feet, add 5#
Men: 100+6, for every inch over 5 feet, add 6#
Ex: 5’2” Female: IBW = 110#
BAW
Biologically appropriate weight
- Weights that are easily maintained without the practice of dieting or other compensatory bx’s
Takes into account: growth charts, UBW, and weight history
Vegan
Person does not consume any animal products or by-products.
Lacto-vegetarian
Person who does not consume animal products with the exception of dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt).
Ovo-vegetarian
Person who does not consume animal products with the exception of eggs
Lacto-ovo vegetarian
Most common type of vegetarian*
Person does not consume animal products with the exception of dairy and eggs products.
Pescatarian
Person does not consume animal products with the exception of fish or seafood.
Pollotarian
“Semi-vegetarian”
Does not consume red meat, fish or seafood
Will consume poultry and fowl only
