State the names of the five main nutrients
Protein,fat,carbohydrates,vitamins,minerals(also need water and dietary fibre)
What % of the body is water?
70%
What are four causes of dehydration?
Excessive sweating in high temperatures, excessive sweating during exercise, vomiting and diarrhoea, low fluid intake.
Four symptoms of dehydration?
Head ache, thirst, lack of concentration and CONFUSION
Functions of water?
Water transports nutrients around the body, it helps us get rid of waste products, it helps protect and lubricate joints,eyes and throat and it evaporates from the skin when we get too hot and therefore helps regulate body temperature.
What does dietary fibre do?
It absorbs water,swells and provides bulk to help move food through the body.
What happens if not enough dietary fibre is eaten?
A condition known as constipation can develop and if it gets too bad you can have bowel cancer as well.
How much fibre should you have each day?
30g
Give four other good sources of good fibre.
Brown rice, fruit and vegetables with the skin, potatoes with the skin, whole grain pasta.
Function of protein?
Rapid growth during childhood and adolescence and for repair and maintenance of all body cells and tissues

Animal. Plant Beef. Soya products Pork. Kidney beans Fish. Lentils Poultry. Quorn Milk, cheese
Fat function
Provide a concentrated source of energy.
Insulate the body to maintain body temperature at 37 degrees

Saturated foods. Unsaturated Butter. Nuts Sausages. Sunflower oils Cream. Avocado Burgers Bacon
Carbohydrates function
Carbohydrates supply the body with energy
Carbohydrates sources
Starch. Sugar Bread. Fizzy drinks Pasta. Some sauces Rice. Cakes and buns Couscous
