What are the six types of nutrients ?
Carbohydrates, water, minerals, vitamins, Proteins and Lipids
What is the role of protein in the diet?
To be used for growth and repair
What is the role of dietary fibre?
To keep food moving through the gut
What must you do to prepare food for a food test?
Crush the food with a pestle and mortar, add a few drops of water and mix well
A sample of food has turned blue-black when iodine has been added, what does this tell you about the food?
Starch is present
What is the test for sugars?
Add a few drops of Benedict’s solution, heat in a water bath and then if the solution turns orange-red sugar is present
What is meant by a deficiency?
When a person does not have enough of a certain vitamin or mineral in their diet
What is the role of the large intestine?
To absorb any water that has been left in the undigested waste
Which enzyme breaks down fats?
Lipase
What is the role of proteases?
To break down proteins into amino acids
Why are enzymes known as biological catalysts?
Because they speed up digestion without being used up themselves
What are some health effects of being overweight?
Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some cancers
