Nutrients And Functions Flashcards
Carbohydrates
- primary source of energy
- organic
- chains of C,H and O
- found in rice, wheat, legumes, vegetables, seed, nits and diary. Fiber is also a carb
Lipids
- organic
- contain C,H and O atoms
- has less oxygen atoms than carbohydrates
- supply more energy than carbs per gram
- found in fats and oils
- most common is. Triglycerides
- useful for low intensity and rest periods
- cholesterol is a lipid found animals and eggs( synthesized in liver)
Protein
- organic
- contains C, H, O and N atoms which create Amino Acids
- support tissue growth, repair and maintenance
- not primary source of energy
- found in beans, meat, dairy seeds nuts and legumes
What nutrients provide energy
Carbs
Proteins
Lipids
What is a macronutrient?
Nutrients that provide support for normal function
“Large”=marco
Lots needed
Water, Carbs, Proteins and Lipids
What is a micronutrient
Nutrients needed in small amounts to support normal functions
Vitamins and minerals
Vitamins
- organic
- help fight disease
- build and maintain healthy bones, blood, muscle and vision
2 types
•fat soluble : A, D, E, K
•water soluble : C and B
Minerals
- inorganic
- single elements that can not be broken down
- body uses as is and for normal function
- helps with energy production, fluid regulation and rids body of harmful by-products
Two types:
•Trace Minerals: body needs in small amounts less than 100 mg per day. Total is less than 5 grams
Iron, zinc, copper, manganese fluoride, chromium, molybdenum, selenium amd iodine
•Major Minerals: body needs in amounts at least 100 mg per day. Total is at least 5 grams
Calcium phosphorus sodium potassium chloride magnesium and sulfur
All found in foods
Water
- inorganic
- macronutrient
- vital for survival
- consumed from many things and many forms
- supports all body functions
