Nutrients Flashcards
5 vital nutrients
Nitrogen
Calcium
Phosphorus
Magnesium
Potassium
Nitrogen purpose
(Green growth)
- vine growth
- grape quality
- component of proteins and chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis
Nitrogen impact
Too much = excessive vigor
Too little = reduced vigor, yellow leaves, stuck fermentations
Calcium purpose
(Green growth)
- structure of plant cells
- photosynthesis
Calcium impact
Too little (rare) = poor fruit set
Phosphorus purpose
(Green growth)
- photosynthesis
Phosphorus impact
Too little (rare) = poorly developed root system (reduced water/nutrient uptake), reduced vine growth, and lower yields
Magnesium purpose
(Green growth and grape development)
- photosynthesis
Magnesium impact
Too little = reduced yield, poor ripening
Potassium purpose
(Grape development)
- vine growth
- regulates flow of water in the vine
Potassium impact
Too much = problems with magnesium uptake, high levels of K in the vine which correlates with pH
Too little = low sugar accumulation, reduced yields, and poor vine growth
