Benner’s stage 1 Novice:

b. No previous level of experience
Benner’s stage 2 Advanced Beginner:
a. Some levels of experience
b. May only be observational in nature
Benner’s stage 3 Competent:
a. Same clinical position for 2-3 yrs
b. Understands organization/specific care required
c. Anticipate nursing care & establish long-range goals
Benner’s stage 4 Proficient
a. More than 2-3 yrs experience in same clinical position
b. Can assess situation as a whole & can readily transfer info learned from previous experiences

a. Diverse experience
b. Able to zero in on problem & focus on multiple dimensions of situation
