What are some of the rationals behind hand washing.
- Wash your hands immediately before and after giving care.
- After touching any contaminated objects
- Before putting on gloves and after removing them.
- Before and after feeding a client
- Dont touch anything when washing hands
- Dont shake your hands to dry them.
- Gey paper towel with your elbow
- Make sure you get under your fingernails
- Dry fingertips to forearms
What is the procedure when putting on Personal Protective Equiptment
- Perform hand hygiene
- Put on gown
- Put on mask
- Put on eye protection
- Put on gloves
Explain the manual lift.
- Involves two people
- Make sure you count
- Have the wheel chair ready beside the bed
- Encourage the client to help out
Explain Mechanical Lifts
What are the bed positions?
Flat Position: Usually sleeping position.
Fowlers Postion: 45-60 degrees
Low Fowlers Position: 15-30 degrees
Semi Fowlers Position: 30-45 degrees
High Fowlers Position: 45-90 degrees
Trendelenburg Positon: Head of bed is lowered and feet is raised
Reverse Trendelenburg Position: Head of the bed is raised foot of the bed is lowered.
What sheets do you need for bed making?
Order of linens:
- Fitted bottom sheet
- Draw sheet
- Incontince pad
- Top sheet
- Blanket
- Pillow case
What are the bed types?
- Closed bed (unoccupied bed)
- Occupied bed
- Open bed (made shortly before bed is occupied)
What are the different ways to position a client??
- Supine: back lying position
- Lateral: Side lying position
- Sims: Either both right arm and leg are on the pillows or opposite depending on weak/strong side.
- Prone: Front lying position on the abdomen with the head turned to one side.
- Sitting position: Client sitting up
- LOG ROLLING: Turns client sitting up the back or side to the other side.
- The client knees opposite from the way your turning needs to be lifted.
What are the Range of Motions (ROM’s) for the Head & Neck?
Flextion: Bring head forward
Extension: Straighten head
Hyperextension: Bring head backwards
Rotation: Turn the head side to side
Lateral Flexion: Move the head to the left and right bending head towards shoulder.
What are the ROM’s of the shoulder?
- Flextion: Raise arm over head
- Extension: Arm to the side
- Hyperextension: Bend arm back
- Abduction: Bring it back to normal position
- Internal Rotation: moving shoulder inwards. (go right on a bike)
- External Rotation: Moving shoulder outwards. (stop on a bike)
What are the ROMs of the elbow??
Flexion: Bend arm to shoulder.
Extension: Straighten arm.
What are the ROMs of the forearm?
Pronation: Palm facing body
Supination: Palm away from the body (your holding a bowel of soup in your hand)
What are the ROMs of the wrist?
- Flexion: Bend hand down
- Extension: Straighten out hand
- Hyperextension: Bend wrist back
- Radial: Thumb to wrist
- Ulner: Pinky to wrist
What are the ROMs of the thumb?
- Hold the clients hand with one hand, and hold the thumb with your other hand.
- Abduction: Thumb away from fingers
- Adduction: Thumb towards fingers
- Opposition: Touch each finger tip with thumb
- Flextion: Bend thumb into hand
- Extension: Move thumb to side of fingers.
What are the ROMs of the fingers?
- Abduction: Spread fingers apart
- Adduction: Bring fingers back together
- Extension:Straighten fingers
- Flexion: Make a fist.
