Proper Hand hygiene

A
  • Roll sleeves up and take off watch or put your watch above the wrist
  • turn the tap on carefully to prevent splashing; make sure water is warm
  • Make sure the hands are below the chest level to avoid contamination by microbes
  • wet hands, then apply soap
  • latter the soap in fingers and rub palms and back of hands with circular motion at least five times each
  • rub the knuckles of one hand into the palm of the other
  • rub thumb on one hand with the palm of the other hand, repeat with other hand
  • work the fingertips on one hand into the palm of the other
  • massage soap into nail spaces
  • clean underneath fingernails
  • include the wrist wash
  • rinse hands thoroughly
  • grab a few paper towels to dry hand, and discard
  • grab a paper towel to turn off tap

Common bed positions and their benefits

A
  • Fowler’s
    • HOB raised 45 degrees; foot of bed may be raised as well
    • preferred while patient eats, used during NGT, and nasotracheal suction
    • promotes lung expansion
  • Semi-Fowler’s
    • HOB raised at 30 degrees; foot can also be raised
    • promotes lung expansion
    • used when pts receive gastric feedings to reduce regurgitation and risk of aspiration
  • Trendelenburg’s
    • entire bed frame tilted with HOB down
    • for postural drainage
    • facilitates venous return in pts with poor peripheral perfusion
  • Reverse Trendelenburg’s
    • entire frame of bed tilted with foot of bed down
    • used infrequently
    • promotes gastric emptying
    • prevents esophageal reflux
  • flat
    • for pts with vertebral injuries and cervical traction
    • for pts who are hypotensive
    • generally preferred for sleeping
