why is the nursing process important?
it provides framework throughout which nurses can apply knowledge, experience, judgement and skills, as well as establish standards of nursing practice to the formulation of a plan of nursing
what are the 5 steps in the nursing process?
- AD- assessment/data collection
- P- planning
- I- implementation/doing
- evaluation
how do we apply the nursing process to patient care?
A: make a list of subjective and objective data
D: analyze the data. create nursing diagnosis/problem
P: list 1 goal for your nursing diagnosis and 3 interventions
I: how will you implement those interventions
E: evaluate the effectiveness of your interventions. how would you change your plan of care if they are not effective?
what is the difference between nursing and medical diagnosis?
nursing: clinical judgement to potential health problems
medical: identification of a disease condition
goals happen in which phase of the nursing process?
planning, during planning the nurse must establish priorities and optimum outcomes of care that can readily be measured and evaluated
when planning a goal for the patient, the goals must be what?

what is a nursing intervention?
they help achieve optimal outcomes
what are the 3 types of nursing interventions?
- independent: no order needed (EX: repositioning a patient every 2 hours)
- dependent: order is needed (EX: foley catheter, medication)
- collaborative: working with other healthcare team professions (EX: dietitian, speech therapists, PT)
Evidence based practice
purpose to deliver high quality care, collect processing implement findings and enhance critical thinking
- using them together are important and essential for the nursing process to make for a safe efficient and skillful nursing intervention
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (important-least important)
- physiological (air, water, food, housing, sleep, sexual activity)
- safety (secure environment in which one can live, work and play)
- love/belonging (to give and receive love)
- esteem (have a high self-image)
- self actualization (achievement and mastery)
