milk limited to 700ml per day as it will reduce iron absorption?
what to take note when administering oral iron?
administer on empty stomach or with fluid containing vit C to promote absorption
administer 2 hours before or after antacid

administer a test dose first
what to take note when administering iron IM?
use Z track method to prevent skin discolouration, scarring and irritating iron deposits on skin
what shouldnt be added to blood units trough IV tubing?

what must be done during blood transfusion?
blood components must be filtered during transfusion to remove clots and small clumps of platlets and wbc
how often is the blood tubing changed?
every 4 hours or 4 units
what to take note for blood coming from the blood bank?
it must be hung within 30 mins and administered within 4 hours
due to the risk of bacteria proliferation in the blood component at room temperature
what blood set is used for all transfusions?
straight blood administeration set
what blood set is used in situations where additional fluid volume needs to be given?
Y type blood administeration set
can the blood be removed from patient be side?
yes but final verification must be done again
what to do when the transfusion starts ?
stay with the patient for 5 mins and access for any clinical sign
temp, HR, BP RR, O2
when to obtain vital sign from patient during transfusion?
immediately after
15 min after initiation
every 30-60 mins until transfusion is complete
what to do after blood transfusion?
access and observe for clinical signs and symptoms of reactions up to 24 hours post transfusion
how many times do you need to invert the blood bag before administering ?
5-10 times
