What does HIPAA stand for?
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
What are unique identifiers HIPAA notes?
Full name, DOB, SSN, medical record number, and reason for care
What is the provider’s role in informed consent?
Explain all the components of the procedure: benefits, risks, complications, and recovery.
-Answer all questions (before and after informed consent is given)
What is a nurse’s role in informed consent?
Be present during the patient’s signature and act as a witness
-Document and upload the informed consent

Living Will- specific instructions for treatment when the patient cannot make decisions
Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA)- A reliable family member or person makes decisions ON BEHALF of the patient when they can’t make choices themselves
