Diarrhea
An increase in the frequency, volume, and fluid content of the stool.
Steatorrhea
Bulky, foul-smelling stool containing fat or grease
Borborygmi
Loud, rushing bowel sounds
Constipation
Defined as including two of the following symptoms for at least 12 weeks in the past 12 months: fewer than 3 bowel movements per week, straining, hard stools, incomplete evacuation, or manual evacuation required for 25% of bowel movements.
Peritonitis
Inflammation of the peritoneum, a serious complication of many acute abdominal organs.
Paralytic Ileus
Impaired propulsion or forward movement of bowel contents
Colectomy
Surgical resection and removal of the colon
Stoma
Surface opening
Ileostomy
An ostomy made in the ileum of the small intestine. The colon, anus, and rectum are usually completely removed. The anal canal is closed, and the end of the terminal ileum is brought to the body surface through the right abdominal wall to form the stoma and allow stool drainage into an external pouch.

A condition in which the intestinal mucosa ineffectively absorbs nutrients-including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, electrolytes, minerals, and vitamins.
Colostomy
An ostomy made in the colon.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Includes two separate but closely related conditions: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Chronic inflammation of the bowel common to a group of conditions that includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
