NURS 500 Chapter 13 Flashcards
What is Adipokine?
HINT: Mechanisms Associated with Energy Balance and Obesity
a. ADIPOKINE are cytokines (cell signaling proteins) secreted by adipose tissue (a source of inflammation modulators). ADIPOKINES have both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory activities and their balance can contribute to the initiation and progression of obesity-induced metabolic changes that can affect other organs (including the brain, heart, vasculature, liver, and muscle) and increase the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disturbances
What is Asbestos?
HINT: Chemicals and Occupational Hazards as Carcinogens
a. Asbestos is a notable occupational factor that affects the upper respiratory passages, lung, bladder, and peritoneum (membrane lining of abdominal cavity). Asbestos most notable increases the risk of mesothelioma (pleura and peritenium) and lung cancer. Asbestos is found in homes built before the 1970s in ceiling tiles, flooring and pipe covers.
