Q

Basic facts of addition strategies and teaching ideas for each

A

Count on facts - using marbles in a tin (starting with x amount already in tin) begin counting from x as you add another

Doubles facts - visualising real objects that come in a particular amount that can be doubled for example: bicycle wheels

Doubles + 1 or +2 - facts that are almost doubles can be shown on ten frames 5+ 6 is the same as double 5 + 1

Tens facts - using a 10 frame and counters to draw attention to how many counters are missing

Bridging to ten - useful for numbers close to 10 like 9 or 8. Use a double tens frame and in the top frame place 9 or 8 counters in one colour on the second frame place the second number in the fact

Last facts - 7+4 doesn’t fit into any other facts this should be emphasised
