NUMBER SYSTEM AND ALGEBRA(Numerical and abstract reasoning) Flashcards
Key characteristics of irrational numbers
Non-terminating and non- repeating decimals
What is a surd?
Irrational root of a rational number
Multiplying surds
Example:
√2 times √7 = √2 times 7 = √14
Simplifying surds
Rewrite the surd into pairs and if it contains a square number, simplify that.
Example:
‘Simplify √40’
We can rewrite this as √4 times √10
Then, simplify √4 as the number 2
So the simplified version of √40 will become 2√10
Laws of exponents (first two)
X^1= X
X^0= 1
Law of exponents (negative exponent)
x^-n= 1/x^n
Law of exponents (exponent raised to another exponent)
(x^m)^n = x^(m times n)
Law of exponents (multiplication of exponents)
x^m times x^n = x^m+n
Law of exponents (division of exponents)
x^m/ x^n = x^m-n
